String Gauges: Thin, Mid, or Thick?

The short version

The thickness of your string changes power, feel, and durability. Here’s how to choose.

What gauge means

Gauge is the diameter of the string, measured in millimetres. The three common ranges: thin (1.20–1.25mm), mid (1.25–1.30mm), and thick (1.30–1.35mm). The trade-off is simple: thinner strings are more flexible, so they give more power and feel but wear out faster; thicker strings are stiffer, so they’re more durable but less lively.

How to choose

If you want maximum spin and feel and don’t mind restringing more often, go thin. If you want durability and a stiffer, more controlled feel, go thick. Most players land in the mid range as a balance. Within a single string, the manufacturer will tell you the gauge — for example, a 1.25mm poly is a mid-gauge.

We carry every gauge from every brand. Tell us what you’re after and we’ll have it on your racquet the next day.
